According to Renzuli, those whose intelligence quotient is over 130, who have the ability to generate new ideas and apply them to solve new problems (creativity), and who have superior motivation to carry a task from beginning to end (superior ability to undertake work and tasks) are considered superior (Cited in Davaslıgil, 2004).
Giftedness and giftedness are two different concepts that are used interchangeably. In our country, being gifted is defined as scoring 130 or more on standard intelligence tests, and being gifted is defined as showing a higher level of performance than peers in intelligence, creativity, art, sports, leadership capacity or special academic areas (MEB, 2006). Instead of these two separate concepts, it seems more appropriate to use the term giftedness in order to better represent these children .
How are Children with Mental Gifted Potential Identified?
First, the intelligence quotient is measured with standard intelligence tests. Following this, the observations of the mother, father and teacher, the observation of the psychologist, the studies the child does at school, and if there is a special talent, the superiority of this talent is measured with appropriate tests, all data are examined together and it is determined whether the child has superior mental ability.
