This disorder, which is called “bipolar mood disorder” or “bipolar mood disorder” in Turkish, is also known as “manic depressive disorder”. The name of the disease used in scientific circles today is “bipolar disorder”. A person in mania (i.e. “manic” patient) is extremely cheerful. He laughs, sings songs, chats with everyone. He spreads joy to his surroundings, his need for sleep decreases. He sleeps very little, but wakes up very refreshed, his appetite increases. The person usually eats more than he has ever eaten in his life. In mania, a person is extremely energetic. He cannot sit still, he does not feel the need to stop and rest for a moment. The manic patient feels very strong, important, and beautiful. He believes he can achieve anything. Sexual desire increases in mania. The manic person usually talks non-stop, almost without taking a breath, and in a loud voice. He jumps from subject to subject. The manic patient’s thoughts are accelerated.
In mania, the patient’s attention is increased, he does not miss small details, but he cannot maintain his attention on a certain subject (i.e. his attention is scattered). Spending a lot of money, making bold and even dangerous investments can be observed. In mania, the patient is cheerful, but he also gets angry easily. When you try to argue with him, criticize his ideas, or prevent his excessive behavior, he becomes very angry. Mania is an “abnormal” condition. The patient is cheerful, happy, energetic, vigorous, humorous, and intelligent, but all his social adaptation is disrupted. Mania is a disease that is noticed on the first day it starts, due to the severe symptoms we have listed above. The person who enters mania cannot continue his school or work. His need for sleep has decreased; the patient cannot stay in one place, cannot concentrate on a certain subject, and cannot continue a certain job. He does not listen to anyone, and constantly talks to himself. He usually harms himself and his surroundings due to his excessive courage. He spends large amounts of money, and the crazy investments he makes for profit cannot be successful. Mania is a temporary condition that usually improves within two to four weeks with treatment. That is why the word mania is followed by the words “attack” or “episode” (mania attack, manic episode). The word “bipolar” also means “two-pole”. One end of the illness is mania, the other is depression. But it is not necessary for the patient to have had a depressive episode in order to diagnose bipolar disorder.
