Vaginismus Treatment

Bu içeriği Yapay Zekâ ile özetleyin

Vaginismus is the largest group of women who apply to clinics with sexual problems in our country. In this problem, sexual intercourse is either impossible or very painful due to muscle spasm. Spasm (excessive contraction) is painful in a way that the woman cannot control. Many women experience this condition in moderate severity the first few times they start having intercourse, but the problem is severe enough to prevent intercourse. This condition usually begins with the first experience. Those that occur later are rarely observed due to postpartum tears or infections.

What is Vaginismus?

In most cases of vaginismus, there is an extreme fear of vaginal penetration. In general, most cases think that their vagina is too small to allow the male organ to enter, or even impossible. Most have heard various stories from friends, aunts or other sources. The most common of these are unrealistic stories such as some couples coming to the emergency room covered in blood or coming to the emergency room with blankets clasped together. Most people enjoy sexual activities other than penetration quite a bit and most can have an orgasm with foreplay. After a while, the woman’s husband starts to share her fears and the husband may also experience reluctance or erection problems. Among those who apply to our clinic, there are even couples who have been married for 14 years and have not been able to have intercourse due to vaginismus. The response to therapy is usually quite good.

Vaginismus Causes

The main causes of vaginismus are physical and psychological (emotional). Intense fear of pain during intercourse, guilt, previous sexual experiences, the relationship with the partner (such as the partner not feeling ready for sexual intercourse, not being sufficiently aroused), traumatic experiences in early childhood and/or later (such as harassment, abuse, sexual assault) are among the main psychological causes. Factors such as urinary tract infections, childbirth, menopause, and chronic diseases are among the physical causes.

Vaginismus Treatment Methods

Vaginismus is a type of sexual dysfunction. Sex therapy, behavioral therapies and medical treatment are quite common in sexual dysfunction. In sexual dysfunctions that occur due to medical treatment, hormonal supplements or various medications are used to eliminate the side effects of the treatment. In some cases, surgical intervention is also performed (erection problems in men or genital area problems in women).

Sex therapy provides very effective results for many couples experiencing sexual dysfunction. Through behavioral interventions and various techniques, it is aimed to provide skills that will strengthen the relationship, especially in problems related to arousal and orgasm, to eliminate anxiety in situations where anxiety occurs, and to establish a healthy interaction between couples.
